Charlene Winston hates her life.
When she was four years old her father, giving up hopes for a son, decided to make his youngest daughter his buddy, nicknamed her Charlie and began taking her along on hunting trips.
While other teenage girls are learning to apply makeup, dress attractively and flirt with boys Charlie, dressed in jeans, boots and a flannel shirt, is tromping fields, hunting pheasant, ducks, deer—whatever is in season.
Raped by her father’s hunting companion, Sam Gordon, she shoots him in the crotch, confiscates his pickup, and flees to Chicago where she finds a job in a gun club. With new friends, and a job she likes, she is happier than she has ever been in her life—except for a nagging fear of being discovered.
Carlo Penna, a former crime boss, and a regular patron of the club, takes a liking to Charlie. When Gordon tracks her down and tries to abduct her, Carlo intervenes. Taking her to his home, he treats her as if she were the daughter he hasn’t seen since he and his wife divorced.
He introduces her to Christina, a modeling agent under whose guidance Charlie blossoms into the beautiful young woman she was meant to be.
When she begins dating “Rod” who, unknown to her, is active in Mafia drug dealing and prostitution, Carlo has him called back to his Miami headquarters. Rod swears to get even. His vengeance leads to an explosive moment in which Charlie shoots two men who attempt to assassinate Carlo.
To protect Charlie, Carlo sends her to Paris. She enrolls in the Sorbonne and obtains a modeling agent.
In Paris, she finds success as a model and a fashion designer, and is courted by highly eligible men, including an English Earl, an Italian wine producer and a French professor.
Despite her success, Charlie feels that something is lacking and, as she searches for that elusive je ne sais quoi that will give meaning and purpose to her life, she learns that all is not going well back in Chicago.
Her former Mafia boyfriend’s persistent effort to infiltrate Carlo’s businesses threatens not only Carlo’s reputation, but his life as well. Deciding to eliminate the problem once and for all, Charlie flies to Miami intending to kill him; someone else beats her to it.
Once this threat is removed and the shooting incident case settled, Charlie returns to Chicago where she discovers the man of her dreams as well as answers that, until now, eluded her. They have been there all along.
Charlie eBook Edna BellPearson
A compelling, captivating read and page turner, which kept me enthralled and riveted throughout, wondering what trouble would befall CHARLIE next. It's well-written with a strong plot, in-depth details, and many surprise twists, especially at the end. I found the lead characters believable, likable and endearing. However, even though my eyes never glazed over, I found it at times repetitive in places.I wish the author had taken time to do some research in Italian (Chicago/NY) slang. It would have made her Mafia foster father more real...because Carlo, uneducated and street smart is too well-spoken and much too polished. (Speaking from experience, having known a bit of that world). Tossing in a few Italian slang words would have made him more plausible...words like, Mangia, Mangia (eat, eat), A Fagiolo (2nd year University), Goombah (slur/jerk), Salute/Salud (toast to your health; cheers), Gizadeech (old chap. old pal, old friend), Mama Mia, etc.
Also, I can't believe her three hot-blooded suiters (especially the young Italian) who were so enthralled and smitten, didn't attempt at least once to make love to her.
Regardless of the above, Kudos to the author Edna Bell-Pearson...I truly enjoyed her CHARLIE and admit it is my favorite book of the year. This thriller/love story would make a wonderful movie. That way, we could see both paintings of this stunning, captivating redhead.

I bought it for the cover. It reminded me of one of my daughters. I read it in 24 hours because it is a really, really good book. A book about a young girl raised as a tomboy at her father's insistence who runs away from home and is taken under the wing of an ex-mafioso and then turns into a most sought after fashion model is not my normal type of book. Not even close. However, it is a well told, suspenseful at times, and particularly heart-warming tale.
The characters are complex and compelling and Charlie has so many layers that keep the reader moving forward to learn more.
"Charlie" is a deeply compelling story, the kind you see on the big screen. Edna Bell-Pearson has taken us on an extraordinary adventure about one woman's triumph over the darker side of life. It has the look and feel and substance of real life. As a fellow writer, I'm drawn to accomplished writing, plots with an abundance of action, twists and surprises, and believable characters. "Charlie" has all of these and much more. I put this amazing novel aside to ensure I had lots of time to read it -- I'm so glad that I did. Once started, I didn't want to put it down. Chances are you won't either! -- James Osborne
Suspense, international intrigue, underworld connections, cosmopolitan settings, violence, romance and a young, most sympathetic central character determined to cast aside a confining past and cruel injustice and overcome challenge after challenge to ascend into accomplished womanhood—Edna Bell-Pearson’s latest novel, Charlie, has it all and more. A thriller, a romance, an action/adventure, a coming-of-age saga the girl Charlie’s story has elements of each all wrapped into one.
After an unhappy childhood culminating in a sexual assault, Charlie strikes out on her own to seek a new identity in the big city. Eventually she is befriended and taken in under the fatherly protection of a former mob boss who arranges for her the beginnings of a modeling career and educational opportunities in France. Complication follows complication—narrow escapes, a bevy of new suitors, triumphs and tragedies which eventually lead her to the borderline of murder.
The settings come alive with the sights and sounds of Europe, the characters are deftly drawn. The action unfolds in a smooth sequence of events that hold the reader totally engaged page after page, pulling for Charlie to prevail. As with her other novels, Edna Bell-Pearson has done her homework here in keeping the details of the narrative and scenes genuine and convincing, the characters rich with personality and depth. For those who love a compelling and excitement-filled plot, this latest is a novel not to be missed.
Loved the book, loved the character! A must read!
This book was highly recommended to me and I immediately purchased it. Needless to say, I was so impressed with Edna Bell Pearson's expertise in her writing ability to make you aware of everything going on in the entire situation of each chapter. The knowledge she has of describing all the events and happenings made you feel like you were sitting there witnessing each conversation and included in that part of the story. I am so glad I had the privilege of reading such a delightful and intriguing novel. I truly could not put the book down and hopefully there will be more novels that match the perfection of "Charlie".
WOW! Who is that runway redhead? What is she doing with a gun -- which she looks like she knows how to use? Why did she go to Paris? The cover alone is enough to make me want to open the book.
I was not disappointed. Charlie has shot someone in retaliation -- in a very unusual place -- and when she is found her father will have reason to regret that he ever taught her how to fire a gun. Fleeing, Charlie buys a wig, which may not keep her flaming red hair from attracting notice. She is lucky to meet several young men, most of whom fall in love with her, but which one will she love in return? If any? Can she ever fall in love?
Charlie is full of unexpected twists, had me riveted until the very end. I heartily recommend Charlie -- unless you have to get up early in the morning.
