In being himself, humorist Will Rogers conveyed an America that united rather than divided people.
As a native Cherokee Indian he conveyed values similar to those of the Iroquois Indian Nation - value that helped inspire the fundamental ideals the Founding Fathers envisioned for their new nation.
Unfortunately, these values conflicted with narrow self-interest, and the ideals have never been fully realized. But during the social and political unrest of the Great Depression, Will Rogers, showed the unifying effect these values have for modern times. It is said that in continually keeping these value in front of the people his wit and wisdom did more than have the nation laughing. They also helped prevent a revolution within the country. Then President Franklin D. Roosevelt said of him tthat he held the "he secret of banishing gloom, of making tears give way to laughter, of supplanting desolation and despair with hope and courage " The values he perpetuated were people-matter values found within the ethics of play

In being himself Rogers so lived these values that he and the American people formed a relationship unlike any that had happened before or has happened since.
His legacy raises a question and a challenge for us today..

I read Eberhart's fascinating book about Will Rogers one Saturday morning. I learned alot about Will Rogers and a bit of history of my own country.
