First Things First A Personal Retreat Journal edition by Colleen Spiro Religion Spirituality eBooks
I love going on retreats - getting away from everyday noise and busyness and spending time with God.Have you ever been on retreat? If you haven't, you may be curious, anxious or even not sure you want to go.
Whether you regularly take a retreat as a faith practice or never been on one and want to know more, you will enjoy reading Colleen Spiro's book - First Things First, a Personal Retreat Journal.
"Retreats are not just for monks and priests and nuns. We are all called to grow in our relationship with God."
Colleen kept a journal she knew she would be sharing with others as she experienced a silent retreat. She shares with us her preparation, her thoughts and emotions, tools that help deepen her time there, and what she learns.
I think the best new idea I took from her easy to read book was to journal more before I go on retreat. She expressed her emotions before leaving and her exploration what to bring with her. Too often I rush into that time away. Colleen's lesson is to slowly prepare through journaling and prayer.
Another lesson is the record what you observe to capture those lessons too. For example Colleen watched a mother duck and her babies that led her to ponder patience - something we all can learn.
First Things First - is a wonderful book for the experienced retreater or one who is going for the first time - and one you will enjoy.

First Things First A Personal Retreat Journal edition by Colleen Spiro Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Before I read Colleen's book, I always thought going on retreat would be sort of like planning an expedition. So many things to prepare, so many things to consider. Colleen has proven me so very wrong! Just by reading her journal entries, I was shown that a retreat is nothing to be feared, but a time of reflection and peace. I get so caught up in the "what should I be doing, what should I be reading, where should I go, how long should it be..." that I would ultimately consider it too difficult to do alone so I would just give up. Now I see that I can have a retreat. I don't need to go away. I don't need to know exactly what I will be doing as long as God is the focus. A retreat is totally doable! I realized that I can probably pull off little "mini-retreats" without ever leaving home.
This book also showed me what a retreat is like spiritually. Following along on her journal entries I came to realize that a retreat is more about letting God take the lead. Let Him lead my thoughts and my time. Keep it simple and just "be". I tend to over-think things like this, so seeing her examples gave me a greater motivation to go on my own retreat and get with God SOON! She does a wonderful job of taking you along for the ride. I felt like I was right there with her from the planning stages to transitioning back into the world.
Thank you, Colleen, for letting me join you on your journey! Thank you for giving me the tools I need to take a trip of my own! It is definitely a God-incidence that your name is Colleen too!
My only disappointment with this book is that it ended all too soon! I wanted to keep reading her gentle inspirational words.
I found her thoughts helpful and will keep them in mind when I make my yearly silent retreat. I, too, struggle with balancing priorities and it is something I need to pray on.
Colleen has inspired me to start keeping my own journal...something I have been doing sporadically but now am more committed.
Thank you for your quiet, gentle wisdom Colleen.
The title of Colleen's book, "First Things First, A Personal Retreat Journal" caught my eyes as I know how rewarding it can be to spend some time in silence with God on retreat. However the last time I went on retreat I had a baby with me and it wasn't easy to focus on prayer and keep silent. I am sure many mothers would find it equally difficult to organise a few retreat days away. So I was interested to read Colleen's words "Sometimes depending on our state in life, we cannot go away on retreat. We might need to do retreat days at home. Or grab an hour here or there, reading some reflections or scripture or sitting in silence." Perhaps Colleen's book would help me have a mini retreat at home?
I picked up some helpful ideas on how to prepare for a retreat which I'd never considered before. I liked how Colleen planned her retreat carefully, thinking about her current relationship with God, issues in her life she wanted to think and pray about, the resources she wanted to take with her... I could feel Colleen's excitement as retreat time approached.
Colleen begins her journal a couple of weeks before the retreat. She records all her thoughts, what she does, how she feels... giving us a good idea of what actually happens on a retreat, both physically and spiritually. Her journal provides us with a model we might want to keep a similar journal in order to get the most out of our few days (hours) of silence.
The "Pause to Ponder" questions were helpful, a starting point for reflection.
The problem I have found with most retreat type books is their length. I never seem to get beyond a chapter or two due to lack of time, which leads to discouragement. However I was able to read Colleen's book very quickly and get a clear overview of what I could achieve. When I finished the book I felt inspired to put aside some time for my own personal retreat. I started asking myself questions about where I am today and where I should be going.
If you feel in need of a little silence and time-out from your busy life, I'd recommend you read Colleen's book. It doesn't matter whether you go away for a few days like Colleen or organise a mini retreat-at-home, this book will give you some helpful ideas so you can make the most of your special time with God.
